Why “bigger is better” is wrong for air conditioning
The most common mistake in Indian residential and small-commercial cooling is oversizing. A unit that is too large for the room hits set-point fast, then switches off before it has run long enough to pull moisture out of the air. The result is a space that feels cold and clammy, with high humidity and a compressor that wears out from constant short-cycling.
A correctly sized system runs longer cycles, dehumidifies properly, holds temperature within a tight band and lasts longer. It also draws less peak power, which matters on Indian grids where summer demand charges can dominate your electricity bill.
What a real heat-load calculation includes
A proper load calculation is not a rule of thumb based on square footage. It accounts for solar gain through glass, wall and roof orientation, occupancy, lighting and equipment heat, fresh-air requirements, and the local design outdoor temperature and humidity for your city — Mumbai, Pune, Delhi NCR, Ahmedabad and Kolkata all have very different design conditions.
For Indian conditions we also build in a monsoon dehumidification margin. In coastal cities, latent load (moisture) can rival sensible load (heat) for months at a time, and an undersized or wrongly selected unit will struggle to hold both temperature and humidity.
Inverter vs fixed-speed: when each makes sense
Inverter (variable-speed) compressors modulate instead of stopping and starting, which suits partial-load conditions — most of an Indian summer outside the peak weeks. They dehumidify better at part load and are noticeably quieter.
Fixed-speed units still have a place where the load is genuinely constant, such as a server room or a process area that needs cooling around the clock. The right choice depends on your load profile, not on a blanket preference for one technology.
Practical steps before you buy
Ask for a written heat-load calculation, not just a tonnage estimate. Confirm the unit is selected for your city’s design conditions. If you are in a humid climate, check the sensible heat ratio of the proposed unit. And always get a fixed quote before any work starts — that is how we run every job at Head On Solutions.
